Know the Difference between a Cold and H1N1 Flu Symptoms
Fever

Fever is rare with a cold.
Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases.
A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the H1N1 flu.

A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.
A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the H1N1 flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough).

Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.
Severe aches and pains are common with the H1N1 flu.

Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.

60% of people who have the H1N1 flu experience chills.

Sudden Symptoms

The H1N1 flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.

Thanks for the reminder of what to look for between colds and flu. The flu symptoms you described are exactly what I had the last week of 1999. It took about 3 weeks to get back to feeling normal. I've gotten a flu shot every year since. lol

Yes Anne, we have some cases of AH1N1 here and it has been controlled somehow although there are more cases coming. You can't really tell the difference between an ordinary flu and swine flu. The best thing to do is to wash hands frequently, singing the Happy Birthday song twice while washing is enough to wash away germs from us. That's all I can say.

This is great that you addressed this issue, especially because some people are prone to panic. Just as a warning: I just got the H1N1 vaccine yesterday, and it does not hurt getting it, but after an hour or two it KILLS! I could not even sleep on the arm that got the flu shot. So just a tip try and get the vaccine on the non dominant arm. Just started following your blog, I enjoy it so much!!

Greaat post. Just wanted to add vomiting. My son had flu last week and it started with him suddenly throwing up at school. He was fine when he left and then wham he was throwing up and spiked a fever a few hours later. It hit very fast like you said.
Helpful information and very timely. I saw a chart with similar information at my doctor's office recently, where, incidentally, they also took away all of the communal magazines that are usually there for everyone to read while waiting for their appointment.
